How scrap gold value works

Scrap gold refers to gold jewelry, coins, or pieces sold for their melt value rather than collectible value. The calculator uses today's normalized gold price per gram to estimate what the metal is worth.

Scrap gold value is lower than the spot price because buyers must cover refining, handling, and margin costs. That is why payouts are usually 80% to 95% of spot.

Karat purity determines how much pure gold is in your item. Higher karat gold contains more gold content and commands a higher value per gram.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is scrap gold value calculated?

We multiply weight in grams by the pure gold price per gram, then apply the selected karat purity and payout percentage.

Why is scrap gold payout lower than spot price?

Buyers subtract refining, handling, and margin costs. Payouts commonly land between 80% and 95% of spot.

What if my gold is mixed karat?

Separate items by karat when possible. Each karat has a different purity and therefore a different value.

Is the calculator an offer?

No. The calculator provides estimates only and does not represent a purchase offer.

How often is the price updated?

We normalize the source price once per day for consistent estimates.
